Biographical / Historical

Pei Te Hurinui says this song was composed by a woman who had been taken captive and raped by her captors who took turns going into the meeting house where she was kept. She was a married woman. Her captors were Ngāti Māhanaga of Waikato at Whatawhata on the east side of the Karamu Range. In the song she tinks of her husband and bewails the fact that she is now forced to have intercourse with all and sundry instead of him alone. Eruera Manuera says the song was composed by his grandmother, Tamaku, for Te Korohiko. She belonged to Ngāti Awa. Manuera's version of the song is a slight variant.
