Biographical / Historical

According to Pei Te Hurinui this waiata was composed by Haukopeke | Ngāti Turangi for the eldest brother of Te Hamuti who was said to have been abducted by Patupaierehe (faries). The performer says it is a lament for Te Haukopeke, who was carried away by a flying ogre to the top of Tongariro.
