Biographical / Historical
Pare Pirikahu says the composer was born at Manukorihi pā by the song was composed at Kaipeke Pā. At one time the women used to go naked to gather mussels and the song is a reply to taunts directed at Waiho because she had been seen doing this. Her brothers wanted the offenders to pay utu in cloaks but the composer sang the song instead saying this would make them pay for generations to come. the compser belonged to the generation of the informant's grandmother (about 100-130 years before 1963. thus, if the above dates are correct the song was compsed ca.1830-1860.
