Biographical / Historical

This song, composed as a Ringatu karakia, could be described as a mākutu. It was composed so that the Taiwhakaea football team would be the Te Teko one. Hekerangi is a pā below Te Teko. Taiwhakaea is a pā at Pāroa. The man, Tararoa who is mentioned in the song was a tohunga who took the Taiwhakea players down to the Rangitaiki River and dipped them as part of a ceremony to ensure that they would beat Te Teko. The singer, who called it a 'hard case' song and very funny, thinks it was composed before the First World War.
