Biographical / Historical
Dictated by the performer whose grandfather, Kāhu, is the subject of the song and who was stated by her to have died at the age of 110. He died when the singer was perhaps 14 or 15 years old and never wore Pākehā clothes. According to a later informant Kāhu died in 1887 at the age of 114. As the song concers the events of his youth it was probably composed in the last decade of the 18th century.
