Biographical / Historical
Kimiatu was a girl in olden times who used to live in a cave at Ivirua called Teputa. She was mistreated and beaten by her father. He also killed her cousin so that this cousin's title would go to Kimiatu. She went to have a bath in the swamp. When she was there she saw a man fishing in the stream and sent to ask for kōkopu fish. The man was bait for people waiting to capture her. The people caught the girl and took her to a place where her father could see them kill her from the cave. Her father was named Ruana`e. The men tied her to a post and piled kīkau leaves around her and set fire to them. Ther father saw but was unable to save her or he would have been killed himself.
