Songs of the Mau, 1936 - 1962
Scope and Contents
Comprises 1 open reel tape with a selection of songs from The Mau movement, and 3 compact disc copies. The recordings were first acquired by Richard Moyle in 1966 from Radio 2AP Samoa in Apia. At his request a copy was made from their 78rpm sound discs, all carrying the New Zealand Broadcasting Service (NZBS) label. The original song recording dates and locations are unknown, but they are believed to be sometime during the NZBS' sixteen-year existence from 1936-1962.
In 2004 the recordings were included on a compact disc titled 'Mau Songs', issued by the Archive of Māori and Pacific Sound and distributed during a one-day symposium on The Mau organised by the University of Auckland's Centre for Pacific Studies.
