First pao begins: "Ko Maihi te awa | Ko Hinekapi te tau". By Hinekapi for Pita Rauhina. Recorded also as McL 122

Second pao begins: "Ki te tini ki te mano | Me hua ki te kēti". By an unknown composer of Ngāti Kahungunu for Te Paerata. Recorded also as McL 138, verse i

Third pao begins: "I te whitu o te ata | Ka rere te reina". By Piki for Parewera Rēweti. Recorded also as McL 138, verse ii

Fourth pao begins: "Noho miai e Paihuti | I te taha o te ahi". By an unknown composer for Parekaihewa. Recorded also as McL 138, verse iii

Fifth pao begins: "Tangi te wihara | I te puihi au". By Rota for Materina Aonui. Recorded also as McL 138, verse iv

Biographical / Historical

The subject of the first pao died about twenty years prior to this recording, aged 70, and the songs are about the events of his youth. The other five songs are about cousins of about the same age.
