Biographical / Historical

Arapeta Awatere states that this is an adaptation from a traditional chant which was used by Tāne Mahuta to give him strength while he parted Rangi and Papa, their parents. Pirihira states that this was Ngāti Pikiao's chant of welcome to the late King George and the late Queen Mary when they visited Rotorua
