Biographical / Historical

The singer explains that this belongs to Matātua. It is about Te Tahi who was stranded on an island by his enemies, but was brought back to land by a whale. He arrived back first and was waiting on the beach when those who stranded him returned. The singers think the Ahuriri mentioned in the song may be the port at Napier.
