Biographical / Historical
This differs slightly from McL 1017. In his announcement the singer describes this item as a ngārahu, a war dance. He gives an explanation of the procedure when visitors arrive before the people of Ngāpuhi: A challenger carries three darts which he throws at three intervals as the visitors approach. After the third dart is thrown a visitor chases the challenger. If he is caught then the visitors do what they wish to him; if he escapes he finds the front of the Meeting House and sits there to wait while the marae etiquette unfolds.
