Biographical / Historical
Ma‘ikai’s family loved her very much. She had a husband called Te Tonga. They had two sons named Maungaati and Arokapiti who were warriors. They belonged to Ngati Tane family. This family didn’t like the missionaries coming to Mangaia. Those who accepted the missionaries fought against the Ngati Tane, and won. This is why the missionaries are on the island. The Ngati Tane looked upon Ma‘ikai as their mother, and this is why they composed the Pe‘e for her.
