Biographical / Historical

There were two men who came from Tahiti to Mangaia in a canoe. Their names were Tatavarenga and Ta‘uatakiri. The canoe came ashore at a place called Tapa, where Ka‘a district is today. They looked at the island, saw it was big, and said they would share it between them. They put a stone in the ground and ran around the island in opposite directions. Where they met they put another stone, and each had the half he had run around. Ta‘uatakiri was a better runner. Tatavavenga took a shortcut and sat waiting for Ta‘uatakiri. Thus Tatavarenga had the greater share.
