Biographical / Historical
There was a man named Tuakere. He used to look after a house full of women at Karanga. He was a strong man. There was another man called Ngangati. He was also a strong, brave man. He wanted to kill Tuakere. He went into Tuakere’s house. Tuakere tried to push him out but Ngangati held on to a tutunga (a heavy timber on which tapa cloth was beaten). Tuakere got very angry and threw both Ngangati and the timber outside. Ngangati went back to get some men to help him. Both tribes went to a place called Kotukutea. They fought there and Ngangati killed Tuakere. Then the Pe‘e was composed for Tuakere.
