Biographical / Historical
The singer explains that the composer was the grandmother of Te Rau Riritahi. She went away on a ship with her lover, leaving her dog behind. Theh song is sung as if by the dog, sittin gon a hill under the shade of a mahoe tree, looking down at Te Mahoe where there is now a dam.
