Biographical / Historical
Verse 1 is the same as the first of McL 533b. Pare Pirikahu says the pao was composed after Te Whiti's death (in 1907). Verse 2 mentions the arrival of the Taranaki people in the three canoes, Tokomaru, Kurahaupō and Aotea; tonga Awhikau disagrees with this. he says the Kurahaupō never reached New Zealand but was wrecked at Omata on the way from Hawaiiki and the people in this canoe were transferred to the Aotea.
