Biographical / Historical
According to the performers Whakatatahaoterangi belonged to Te Aitanga-a-Mātangi. The song makes reference to the coming of the early Māori seafarers to New Zealand and the bringing of the kumara plant and planting it at Makauri in Gisborne.
