Scope and Contents
Stories and accounts of Niuafo'ou told by various speakers in conversation with Thomas Riddle. Recorded in Niuafo'ou, Tonga, in November 1977.
Contents:
1. Palu Hea concludes his stories from File 2.
2. Savou, of Fata'ulua, begins with the story and the ritual of the 'ume, or leather-jacket fish. Savou tells the story of Seketo'a, the superman of Niuatoputapu and then moves into the story of how the mountain of Niuafo'ou was moved to Niuatoputapu. The... story of Lihau, Tuiā, and Fotofili follows. Then Savou's version of the popular tale of Tongamatamoana. Savou tells the story of the vana, a sea-egg with long spikes.
3. Hele, from Kolofo'ou, begins with the story of the death of Folau from Sapa'ata; Folau was killed by sharks. Hele then tells his version of the evacuation of 1946. He then tells the story of the destruction of the village of 'Ahau.
4. Manafa, from Kolofo'ou, poetically tells the story of the grub called 'Ofatu in Niuafo'ou. He speaks in Niuafo'ou dialect.
5. Savou, of Fata'ulua, tells the story of the devil called 'Alamafao. He moves on to the story of the rock called Maka Mapu Hia and finishes with the story of another rock called Laho 'o Tuiā, which in English means The Scrotum of Tuiā. The story concludes on File 4.
