Niuafo'ou, 1977-11
Scope and Contents
Stories and accounts of Niuafo'ou, told by various speakers in conversation with Thomas Riddle. Recorded in Niuafo'ou, Tonga, in November 1977.
Contents:
1. Fo, from 'Esia, continues his stories from previous tape.
2. Pale Napa Lavelua, from Kolo Fo'ou. When Niuafo'ou was evacuated in 1946, Pale stayed behind. On this tape he tells some of his stories. He is a good storyteller and in the conversation he tells what life was like on the island when he shared it with only a few others.
3. Lusiane Ta'u Fo'ou tells the story of a man called 'Auhe and the ghost called Manamate. She tells her personal account of the evacuation in 1946. It is a vivid and at times bitter description of the evacuation and her eventual return to her home. She finishes with the tale of Takitaki Malohi and Mane; it is a folk tale.
4. Palu Hea, from Fata'ulua, begins with the story of the rock called Hangai Tokelau. He tells the story of the 'ume or leather-jacket fish and the ritual connected with it. Continues on tape 3.
