Niuafo'ou, 1977-11
Scope and Contents
Stories and accounts of Niuafo'ou, told by various speakers in conversation with Thomas Riddle. Recorded in Niuafo'ou, Tonga, in November 1977.
Contents:
1. Taufa, a man from Sapa'ata, Niuafo'ou, begins by telling the story of Tongamatamoana, an invader from Niuatoputapu (or Vava'u). The story tells how he came to Niuafo'ou, conquered it, and then was killed by Paula Mata Lave. It is a popular Niuafo'ou story. Next he tells the story of the beginning of Niuafo'ou and of the first man to live on Niuafo'ou, Masi. Finally comes his version of the story of Mahina, a woman who fell in a blow hole and was killed.
2. Uitalia, a man from Fata'ulua, tells the story of Tongamatamoana. It is similar to Taufa's version.
3. Sione Mapu, from 'Alele 'Uta, Niuafo'ou, tells the story of the Malau and of some old courting customs. The malau are birds that bury their eggs deep in the soil of Niuafo'ou.
4. Sione Tu'u, from Tongamama'o, tells the story of Mahina. This is followed by a story of the beginning of the village of Tongamama'o, stating that Fotofili named it.
5. Manafa, from Kolo Fo'ou, tells the story of Lihau and of Tongamatamoana.
6. Fo, from 'Esia, tells the story of 'Ahau and of the Volcanic eruptions. He continues on File 2.
