Biographical / Historical
Arapeta Awatere states emphatically that this song was composed by Wharerangi of Ngāti Tūwharetoa to Te Rauparahā, when he was being pursued by Ngāti Raukawa of Maungatautari and Ngāti Maru of Hauraki, and Wharerangi .gave him refuge. Accordingly it was not composed by Te Rauparahā. Conventional story recorded in McL 100
