Biographical / Historical

Jones says the Wahineiti of the song was a chieftain of Ngāti Raukawa and was killed at Rangatua Point on the west side of Lake Taupo. Turau Te Tomo disputes this in a pre-announcement to McL 423. The performer says Wahineiti was returning home from an espedition in the Maungatautari district when he was killed on the road.
