Biographical / Historical

According to the people of Taupo the composer was Te Rauparahā of Ngāti Toa. Arapeta Awatere (McL 9) argues that the composer was Wharerangi. The version given here is as recited by Tūwharetoa and Tainui peoples of the King Country. It was obtained by Pei Te Hurinui in 1930 from Nguha Huirama of Whatawhata district. The performer calls this Te Rauparahā's war dance, which he performed when he was at Rotoaira on Motu-o-phi, and named it after Te Taharoa, the battle of Tau-matakanga.
