Biography

Dame Judith Mary Binney (1940-2011) (nee Musgrove), Te Tomairangi o te Aroha, 1940-2011. Historian. Born in Australia 1940. Attended Auckland University and taught in the History Department 1966-2004 retired as Emeritus Professor.

Best known for her well-regarded books on the early missionary, Thomas Kendall, Tuhoe leader Rua Kenana, 'Nga Morehu' (an oral history of a group of Tuhoe women), a life of Te Kooti Rikirangi Turuki, and her Tuhoe/Urerewa history 'Encircled lands'.See Dominion Post Obituaries (Saturday, February 19, 2011, A25). The name Te Tomairangi o te Aroha was bestowed upon her by Ngai Tuhoe at Waikirikiri Marae in Ruatoki during the blessing of her book 'Encircled Lands' in 2009.

Binney was made Companion of NZ Order of Merit, 1997, Fellow of Royal Society in 1998 and Distinguished Companion of NZ Order of Merit, 2006. She was married to painter Don Binney, and later to Sebastian Black.
