Biography

Horlbeck was born on January 28, 1924, in Whiting Indiana. He received his BSc in Chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1949 and then took an MA in Art History from the same school two years later before pursuing a PhD at the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London. He achieved his goal in 1957 with a dissertation titled, “Decorative Painting in English Medieval Architecture.”

He became an assistant professor of art history at UW-Madison in 1958 and retired a full professor in 1995. Horlneck died on 14 January 2019.

Scope and Contents

A collection of seven illuminated manuscript fragments donated by Emeritus Professor Frank R. Horlbeck, Department of Art History, University of Wisconsin - Madison. The fragments include a leaf from a 15th century liturgical psalter, depicting verses from Psalm 40, a decorated initial ‘N’ possibly from a mid-15th century Italian antiphonary (a book of music for a choir), and a leaf from a Dutch Book of Hours.

Dates: Mainly 15th century.
