Biography

Marjorie Cecil Fowler (nee Crompton) (1921-2014) was a teacher, left-wing activist and member of the Communist Party of New Zealand.

She was born in Appleby Magna, Leicestershire, England in 1921 and came to to New Zealand with her family in 1932.

She joined the UK China Friendship Society (Society for Anglo Chinese Understanding) while living in London in the 1950s and later joined the Auckland Branch of the NZ China Friendship Society. Fowler was made a life member of the Society in 2002 having served on the National Executive over a number of years, including being National Secretary from 1987-1989, North Island Vice President. She also served as Auckland Branch President at various periods and was a member of the Auckland Guangzhou Sister City Committee.

Fowler was also a member of the Council for Civil Liberies, the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, and worked tirelessly for CORSO and Trade Aid.

She died in July 2014.
