Biography

Peter Howard Hughes was born in Auckland in Spetember 1950.

Library Director of UNITEC Library from 2007 until his death Hughes was also the Librarian at Sylvia Ashton-Warner Library, Auckland College of Education between 1996 and 2007 and worked at the Alexander Turnbull Library, the Auckland Institute and Museum Library and University of Auckland Library during his long career as a professional librarian.

He was also convenor of the Auckland working party for the Dictionary of NZ Biography, Auckland Museum representative on the New Zealand Academy for the Humanities and member of the steering committee for the New Zealand Print Culture History Project. In 2003 he was awarded a Fellowship of LIANZA for his contribution to the library profession and demonstrating outstanding leadership and research qualities.

Hughes had a special interest in New Zealand small press publishing.

He died unexpectedly on 15 Aug 2015, aged 64 years (notices.nzherald.co.nz, cited 19 Aug 2015).
