The bulk of the papers consist of the office records of a Cabinet minister, his earlier and later life being less fully documented. The correspondence covers family, business, political and social matters with a wide array of people in N.Z. and overseas, particularly the United Kingdom, U.S.A., and South Africa. The papers in this collection cover McAra’s years of study and research into Marxist-Leninist ideology and the problems of the working class. They document his membership of the Communist Party of New Zealand and expulsion from the Party; his activities as a pamphleteer; and aspects of his personal and family life.
